China isn’t that wonderful for breakfast. Despite the great range of breakfast foods, dumplings, noodles, assorted fried goods, there just never seems to be anywhere open before 11am. Several mornings have seen us wandering, forgoing the hole in the wall dumpling kiosks, looking for a place to sit and slurp down a bowl of spicy noodle soup. In suzhou especially this was difficult, it seems the locals all eat breakfast at home or on the run, so this morning we ended up with a boring western breakfast.
Boring but filling it saw me all the way through til 3pm (the breakfast and the pomelo Felix and I shared on the bus to Nanjing).
Wandering the streets on a Sunday afternoon Nanjing searching for lunch proved interesting and fruitful. Away from a bustling shopping mall we stumbled across an alley packed with muslim noodle bars, fruit stalls and dried fruit, nuts and seed carts. One man was making something different.

He spreads this thick wholemeal savoury pancake batter onto the pan.

Cracks an egg on top and mixes it around with some chilli and a peanutty looking sauce that we declined.

Topped with pickled green vegetables, coriander and spring onions and then a pre-fried crunchy thing goes in and the whole pancake is rolled up and cut in half.

Crunchy, salty, spicy and warm, spiked with the fresh coriander and onion this pancake hit all of the spots.
Paying is by the honour system

It cost 1.80Y (about 20 cents), we shared, but an entire portion would have filled me up.

no longer will the coppers i’ve been collecting be used for natural dyestuff- but for ms lili’s ‘fabulous pancake’ weekend market stall in paddington - franchised to nimbin, byron & bangalow with mid week at lismore organic market.
(your pix & writing getting better each post) the pancake master looks well rugged up for the cold and very comfortable about being the centre of your attention. yummmmm love pmum
